Paint My Bird Day 1, 2 and 3

You know when you have an idea for a new "something" and you think to yourself "this could be really awesome, or it could fail miserably". Well I had both of those thought bubbles floating around in my mind when I decided to start this latest project, and honestly the "fail miserably" one was winning.

But I am very happy to say that it's day 3 and this is the most fun I have had with a project for quite a while! Yay! Instead of getting caught up worrying about whether or not people will like or want to buy what I create, I have designed this project around a Pay What You Like system, so there's no barrier, and it also takes the pressure off me to create a "sell-able" product. And guess what?? They're all selling. For all different amounts too, and I'm totally OK with that.

I am loving how people have gotten involved and sent me suggestions and photos for birds to paint. And I love how when I sit down to paint I don't even know what's going to end up on the page, I just start and see where it goes. No editing or re-doing. Just the raw creation. It's been very liberating.

I have a list of over 15 birds to paint, so even though my project was meant to go for 10 days I will extend it to paint them all. It's too fun to stop!

Here's what I have so far.

DAY ONE: Kookaburra (5.8x8.3") Watercolour and Unipin Pen

DAY ONE: Kookaburra (5.8x8.3") Watercolour and Unipin Pen

DAY TWO: Goldfinch (5.8x8.3") Watercolour and Unipin Pen

DAY TWO: Goldfinch (5.8x8.3") Watercolour and Unipin Pen

DAY THREE: Peacock (5.8x8.3") Watercolour and Unipin Pen

DAY THREE: Peacock (5.8x8.3") Watercolour and Unipin Pen

That's all for today. I'll be back with another update soon.

Thanks for reading!

Project Paint My Bird

This week I have been working on my latest pet portrait, my first time creating one in oil. It took longer than I expected, but it’s finished and it’s fabulous! I can’t wait to show you!

It’s been a real challenge (in a good way!) and it has me excited to create some awesome new work. But oil requires patience, it takes a long time between layers waiting for paint to dry so it doesn't crack, and as much as I enjoy that meditative style of work, sometimes I like to just create something to completion in one sitting.

So on Tuesday, while I was in the shower (#showeridea) I was thinking to myself “what can I create that’s relatively quick and fun?” I was thinking of Project Hummingbird and how exciting that was as my first ever artistic project and I wanted a new one like that, just for the fun of it.

Kyle has been listening to Simon Sinek's book Start With Why, so we have been having all of these great conversations about what what our "why" is and how differently you work when you start from that place.

My why is to have fun creating what I like, and at the same time make it accessible and available to people who love it.

So immediately after my shower I pulled out my watercolours and created some very colourful splatter art, and decided it wasn't quite right. Start again.

I messily painted out a Blue Wren, splattered some paint in the same colours (no rainbows this time), added salt crystals for some interesting pattern and then once it dried filled in the missing parts with Unipin fineline Pen. I loved it!

And my love affair with birds continues.

The idea was to have a kind of unfinished painting, so it's not exactly accurate or perfect, but you immediately know what it is. In this way I have freedom to create without limitation while also creating something interesting and beautiful.

What do you think? This is A5 (5.8x8.3").

Ta-da! New project idea! I have been creating something new every day so why not create something for YOU?

And so, Project Paint My Bird comes to fruition.

I want you to be involved. I want it to be fun and I want to act on my intuition, so this is going to be a paint by suggestion, and a pay whatever you like project.

How it works

  1. In order to keep things simple and so you/I can keep track all suggestions and sales will be made via FB or Instagram.
  2. Send me your suggestions for a bird you think I should paint and I'll paint it during the 10 days of the project. Make your suggestion in this Facebook post.
  3. I will paint one bird a day in the above style for 10 days starting Monday 26th September
  4. If you love any of the birds I paint, you can have it by paying any amount you like** (first in best dressed) via Paypal.me. Make sure you act fast, first person to comment sold on FB gets it.
  5. You get a lovely ORIGINAL little bird in the mail :-)

*I know you love me so please include shipping/packaging cost of $3.00 in Australia and $7.00 for anywhere else in the world. Thank you!

**If the pay what you want idea freaks you out too much I have previously sold artwork this size anywhere from $40-$200.

Oh p.s. the above Blue Wren is up for grabs :-)

Want in?

Send me your suggestion!
