I'm taking a leap. I'm putting myself out there, as an artist!
In November, 2014 while my husband Kyle and I were living on opposite sides of the world, we had a conversation about the best ways to wind down before going to sleep. He mentioned that he had been doodling at night whatever came into his head. That sounded pretty good to me, so I though I'd give it a go to.
What started as random scribbles in biro on bits of scrap paper, very quickly evolved into me sitting in bed until unmentionable hours of the night recreating pictures I found and loved. Unlike any other habit I have tried to create for myself, I didn't get sick of drawing and just move onto the next thing. Each piece I created only made me want to make more.
My daily routine went from work, eat, tv, read, sleep to art, art, art and art! It's easy for me to spend an entire day working on a drawing or painting, to the point where I forget to have lunch! And if you know me at all you know I really like food!
" It's a similar feeling to when you first fall in love with someone. You want to be around them all the time, and you can't stop thinking about that person!" was how I explained this new discovery Kyle.
That's the way I feel about art. It's crazy! I didn't even know I had the capacity to enjoy something so completely.
So, back to me taking this "leap".
This project I'm working on is me taking that first step, and putting myself out there as an actual artist. I'll admit that this makes me extremely uncomfortable. I feel like I'm not really good enough to be able to sell my work. There are so many people out there with incredible talent, and I wonder if what I am doing is worth anything. I totally have imposter syndrome.
But that's exactly why I'm doing this. It's allowing myself to be happy with what I'm creating, and sharing it. How will I know if this is what I want to do if I don't even give it a go.
Project Hummingbird (completed successfully in April 2015)
Last week Kyle set me the task of making my first $500 from the work I love. I had to think of ten projects which I could complete and sell. "What do you mean TEN!? I can't even think on one!" Geez!
But with some help, I got ten ideas out, and chose this one to start. Mainly because this was the one I felt most comfortable with. And also I just love hummingbirds!
If enough orders are made before Sunday 22nd March, I'll be creating 19 5"x5" hummingbird paintings which will each be available for $27.
(27 is my age if you're wondering about the price.)
All 19 pieces will be similar, however they are all originals and will all be unique in design and colour.
You can choose the main colour for the design you want when you check out.
Here's how it works:
This is an experiment for me to see how people respond to my work.
- Place your order below - you will need to enter your credit card but won't be charged yet.
- Other people order theirs too.
- If all 19 paintings are ordered your card will charged on Sunday 22nd March. If not, the project won't go ahead and you won't be charged. (Just like Kickstarter)
Paintings will be created in the next two weeks and shipped during the first week of April.
All 19 ORIGINAL paintings are SOLD OUT!
Thank you all so much for your support! I'm totally blown away! Order a print here You can also sign up for my email newsletter to keep updated on Project Hummingbird. I'll be sharing my designs as I work on the project.
